Mastery over hours

Why effective learning is not measured by hours at a desk

A mastery-based approach can make learning shorter, deeper, and kinder for gifted, high-IQ, neurodivergent, fast, slow, and uneven learners.

Time is a weak proxy for learning. A child may sit for three hours and learn little, or work with full attention for 25 minutes and make a real conceptual jump.

Mastery-based learning asks a better question: can the child solve it, explain it, transfer it, and revisit it later without collapse?

That matters for high-IQ and gifted children who are under-challenged, for autistic or ADHD learners who need a different rhythm, and for children who race ahead in one subject but need careful scaffolding in another.

AI becomes valuable when it helps choose the next smallest useful step instead of simply generating more tasks.
